CALL FOR ARTISTS is open to established professional Mural Artists residing in New York State. Artists or Artist teams are invited to submit qualifications through the CAFÉ website.

The Haverstraw River Arts Fund Inc. requests submissions for consideration to create an original mural design in conjunction with the (HAAC’s, Haverstraw African American Connection’s) Haverstraw African American Memorial Park in Haverstraw’s Historic Downtown District. We are offering TWO commissions to professional mural artists or artist teams working in two-dimensional media, including but not limited to painting, photography, graphic design, printmaking, and drawing to create original artwork designs to be reproduced as large-scale murals.
SITE 1: Mural will be painted directly on the building’s wall.
SITE 2: Mural will be painted directly on pavement and must be in grayscale only.
GOALS OF THE MURALS:
The artwork for the Haverstraw African American Memorial Park should be vibrant and colorful on the wall and grayscale on the pavement ground, incorporating representational as well as, abstract and patterned elements. The park's history should inspire the theme and content of the artwork, which honors the generations of African Americans who have lived in Haverstraw. The village's industrial and cultural history is closely intertwined with brick production, one of its main industries. Many workers went unnoticed, and their stories remained untold. The artwork should serve as a platform to reflect the life stories of these workers, their families, and their ancestors. The park is also set to become the future home of a Harriet Tubman statue. Today’s community reflects a diversity of people living in harmony and unity.
Haverstraw Riverwide Arts Mural Project - African American Memorial Park (AAMP), offered by Haverstraw River Arts Fund Inc., is funded by the New York Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC) through the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). Each mural will remain on view indefinitely.
Note: Artists or artist teams are welcome to submit to both commissions, SITE 1 and SITE 2. Submissions must be labeled for the proper site; SITE 1 or SITE 2.

Budget
Final elected Artists or Artist Teams will each be compensated in a total amount not to exceed $25,000 for Site 1 and $8,000 for Site 2. The compensation amount to the artist requires the artist to be 3 responsible for the costs of final artwork design, digital file preparation, applicable NY sales/use tax, Workman’s Compensation Insurance, and general liability insurance coverage in a minimum amount of one million dollars, transportation, installation, materials, scaffolding, site prep, site safety, site cleanup and production of mural.
Requirements for Submission
1. Must provide background information on the artist, such as educational and proof of professional mural experience, examples of previous public work, and references.
2. All artists must supply references and proof of proper insurance. Proof of insurance must include general liability coverage in a minimum amount of one million dollars and workers’ compensation coverage.
3. Ability to meet project deadlines and perform work promptly and professionally.
4. Materials used are of high quality and have durability for outdoor weathering, including UV protection and containing no lead.
Evaluation/Selection Process
An Artist Selection Panel established by the Haverstraw River Arts Fund, Inc. and New York Housing Trust Fund Corporation will evaluate submitted concepts and award the mural to an artist(s) that meets all criteria listed.

All Artists are required to submit their qualifications in the format specified below by September 22, 2023, 11:59 p.m. (MST) Qualification materials include: CAFE site fills this in.
Letter of interest/Artist Statement: Limit to 1,000 characters, including a short narrative explaining interest in the project and general artistic approach.
Images: Limited to ten (15) images of previous work and concept for mural.
Annotated image list: Provide a brief description of each image, detailing the titles, dates, media, and dimensions of the artwork.
Resume: Limited to two (2) pages. Demonstrate professional history and skills or experience as a professional working Muralist.
Professional references: Limited to one (1) page. Provide three (3) references, including name, organization/title, phone number, and email.

Downtown Haverstraw is a unique urban enclave that boasts a diverse collection of ethnicities. This village is a hub for artistic, culinary, musical, and cultural opportunities and stands out as well for its unique geographical beauty, long history, and vibrant revitalization as a riverfront community.
The colonial history of Haverstraw dates to the 1600s when Henry Hudson named it. In the early 18th century, Haverstraw became the largest brick-producing region in the United States. At its peak, the village contained dozens of brickyards and produced millions of bricks annually to build downtown New York City, including the Chelsea Market.
The African American Memorial Park in Haverstraw was founded and continues to be developed and maintained by The Haverstraw African American Connection of Haverstraw (H.A.A.C). This organization is dedicated to researching, recovering, preserving, and teaching the rich culture and contributions of African American people to this historic Hudson River village. The Haverstraw Riverwide Arts Mural Project, in collaboration with H.A.A.C., aims to foster the village's long history of art and creativity through public outreach of this mural project. The intent of the project is to promote knowledge, acceptance, and appreciation of the African American heritage on the shores of the Hudson.
